Movie tie-in games are money makers when done right. The right movies have produced classics. GoldenEye 007, The Die Hard trilogy, The Warriors and Alien Isolation. But developers have to pay upfront and we seriously doubt they will pay for these.
IT/Pennywise – Aside from being a skin in another game, there has not been an IT game or a Welcome to Derry. It could happen but they might have to find a way around the whole child killing, sexual perversions and general bad taste. Best of luck with that. Getting Bill Skarsgård to do voice work would be very difficult. Getting the license for the studio?Tougher. Throw in The Shining DLC.
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest: Escaping the mad house while neutralising the orderlies while playing as Randal Patrick McMurphy. A stealth and action game (a mental health Metal Gear Solid) with Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher and not Sarah Paulson) being the final boss. Doesn’t have a hope with today’s sensibilities on mental health, let alone revealing why McMurphy ended up there in the first place.
Psycho – I am really surprised they haven’t at least run with this in Dead by Daylight or another horror game. But the meek Norman Bates himself isn’t the one we fear but ‘mother’ herself. The problem is everyday gameplay. We have the house, the swamp and the motel. But we need a central character to catch Norman/Mother and a new twist, given how well-known the ending is.
American Psycho – Not a chance they will unleash this on the public. Not with all we can read in the book. Won’t happen and can’t happen. It would be the type of game to bring the clouds of regulation and censorship down on the industry. An indie studio could try but if you think Manhunt had heat, a Patrick Bateman game (whether you play as him or not) is a non-runner.
Hannibal Lecter – On this one, there is potential but it requires brainwork to get it right and let’s be honest, there are only two are three developers who could get this right at all. There are the added villains of Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs, Francis ‘Toothfairy/Red Dragon’ Dollardyde from Red Dragon, but you can forget the villain Mason Verger here if you want any chance of this being even considered for a console.
Movie tie-in games will be around until one of the two areas implodes. However, you need a blockbuster. Nothing less than Harry Potter, Star Wars, Marvel or DC will do when it comes to guarantees. These poor Academy Award winners (well, some of them) above will have to stay in their lane.
